Round-up Of Sexual Perverts

Police Urge Public To Co-operate

Police are seeking public co-operation to assist them round up sexual perverts who have been attacking women and young girls.

They want any woman molested by a man to report the matter immediately to police headquarters (phone F0244). Names given in these cases will be treated as confidential.

Prompt reporting of offences may enable police to surround an area and arrest an offender. Detectives who investigated several attacks on young girls and women in the Thornbury district recently were amazed at the number of other offences about which they learned details. The women concerned had not reported the incidents because they had not been harmed.

Police experience great difficulty in making arrests in sexual crimes even when they are reported promptly. The majority of sexual offences take place in dark areas, and generally the only person to see the attacker is the victim of the assault.

Most descriptions of suspects are vague, and they seldom provide sufficient grounds for an arrest.

There have been 30 attacks on women and girls in recent months, which police have been unable to clear up. The offences have been committed in almost every suburb.
